The very first sentence hooked me. I thought the difficult subjects of dementia and euthanasia might be too heavy, but they're handled with sensitivity and humor. The book also gives a fascinating glimpse into the world of trauma nursing. There are some beautiful turns of phrase, and the characters and LA setting are so vivid I wondered if it was a memoir.

"House on Fire" captures the reader's attention and doesn't let go, beginning with: "My mother asked me to kill my father on Christmas"... Many of the challenges faced by Bernadette are familiar; caring for elderly parents, navigating end of life issues, unequal responsibility sharing amongst adult siblings, dealing with your child's mental health issues, all while working full time. The nurse's voice, the mother's voice, the adult daughter's voice can be heard throughout this book with pearls of wisdom and moments of despair. Just beautiful. Highly recommend, thank you D. Liebhart, for writing this fantastic book.

A beautiful story of family ties and the secrets we keep in the name of love. The perfect amount of tension and suspense woven into a narrative bursting with emotion. Grateful to have read an advanced copy! I loved the relationship between the adult children and their aging parents... made me really think of 'what ifs' and appreciate what I have. Great read, definitely recommend!

Without being preachy, the story illustrates how the burden of care often falls predominantly on women. The themes of the ethics of euthanasia and the challenges of balancing care for aging parents with the demands of raising a special needs child would provide fertile ground for book club discussions."

The characters in House on Fire seem so real and so imperfect that the novel feels almost like a memoir. The writing is excellent; I very seldom feel as glued to the page as I did reading this. I didn’t want to stop reading. This is a story about a family and a world with plentiful dilemmas and no easy answers. Yet, it isn’t a bleak story. Despite the trauma and heartbreak, there are moments of humor and love. I felt enriched by reading it.
